FIFA Approves Goal-Line Technology

Rejoice, for FIFA have finally confirmed that goal-line technology has been approved and will be in place for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

The system had been given a trial during the Club World Cup at the end of last year and will also be used during this summer's Confederations Cup.

President Sepp Blatter released the following statement:

"After a successful implementation of Goal-Line Technology (GLT) at the Club World Cup in Japan in December 2012, Fifa has decided to use GLT at the 2013 Confederations Cup in Brazil and the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The aim is to use GLT in order to support the match officials and to install a system in all stadia, pending the successful installation, and pre-match referee tests."

FIFA has yet to confirm whether it intends to use the popular Hawkeye system as seen in other sports, or to implement Goalref, which uses magnetic sensors rather than cameras to determine whether or not the ball has crossed the line.

Hopefully the implementation of GLT will spark the influx of technology to be used for other key decisions as well, such as penalty calls and red calls, but for now let us just be happy that finally FIFA has accepted that we are in the 21st century.
