Four goals from Robert Lewandowski gave Dortmund a 4-1 victory in the first-leg of their Champions League semi-final.
An early first-half goal was cancelled out by a Ronaldo equaliser after an error from Hummels but Lewandowski returned in the second half to finish the job.
The away goal could prove vital at the Bernabeu and Madrid, like their compatriots last night, have a hefty challenge ahead of them if they want to advance to Wembley.
Dortmund started the game superbly as Lopez produced a fine save to deny Marco Reus and Ramos got back to stop Lewandowski from finding the goal with the rebound.
Just minutes later, Dortmund took the lead. Mario Gotze crossed invitingly into the box and Lewandowski was there to find the net from close range.
The goal enabled the home side to settle comfortably into the match, with Real attempting to find a way back into the match and looking at Ronaldo for help.
The Portuguese star had a brilliant effort from distance saved by Weidenfeller and Schmelzer blocked Khedira's effort well as Real searched for a way back into the match.
Real pushed forward and started to find their feet but Dortmund were resilient and determined to not give the Spanish giants an easy way back into the match.
However, they found one. Hummels sloppily gave the ball away to Higuain who unselfishly squared the ball to Ronaldo who had an easy finish, giving Madrid a vital away goal.
After a great start to the game, Dortmund began to filter out towards the end of the half and Madrid were starting to liven up.
At half-time it was all square but no one could predict what would be witnessed in the second 45 minutes.
Dortmund started the half in the same fashion as the first- with a goal.
Lewandowski was on hand to poke home his second of the night but Madrid were angry as they felt the Polish striker was offside. Replays showed the referee had made the correct call as Pepe was playing him on.
Lewandowski grabbed his hat-trick with 30 minutes of time remaining after a sublime touch in a crowded penalty box and drilling the ball past Lopez- scoring the first hat-trick against Real Madrid in the history of the Champions League.
Gundogan almost grabbed Dortmund another goal after a sensational run which Lopez did well to tip over the bar.
Xabi Alonso barged over Marco Reus to concede a penalty, which Lewandowski stepped up to take.
He fired the ball straight down the middle to give his side a comfortable advantage and put the fans into dreamland.
Lewandowski almost got his fifth and was only denied by a fine save by Lopez, who tipped his effort over the crossbar.
As the game progressed into the final stages, Real searched for another away goal which would restore hope heading into the second leg.
A superb tackle from Hummels stopped Ronaldo from getting his shot away and Varane fired a shot wide of the target when the ball fell to him inside the box.
