Chelsea, Newcastle and Spurs all progressed to the last 16 of the Europa League, but Liverpool crashed out to Zenit St Petersburg despite a 3-1 win at Anfield.
Late goals were the order of the day for the London clubs as Eden Hazard struck in stoppage time to send Chelsea through 2-1 on aggregate against Sparta Prague, whilst someone that wasn't Gareth Bale scored an absolute screamer for Spurs to send them through with just minutes left against Lyon.
Rafa Benitez's side had managed a 1-0 win in the Czech Republic last week, but the visitors to Stamford Bridge levelled the tie after just 17 minutes through David Lafata. The home side created plenty of chances despite the absence of the talismanic Frank Lampard, but Fernando Torres missed an extraordinary amount of gilt edged opportunities to leave the Chelsea faithful feeling ever so slightly nervous as the match approached its conclusion. Gareth Bale will no doubt he looking forward to it even though he wasn't the man to score the vital goal for Spurs for the first time since the original Planet of the Apes was released.
A penalty from Shola Ameobi on 64 minutes handed Newcastle a 1-0 victory away to Metalist Kharkiv to send them through by the same scoreline on aggregate. The Magpies were unfortunate not to have won the first leg having had two Papiss Cisse strikes chalked off for offside, and the Senegalese striker was lively again in the second leg and had chances in the first half to put the tie to bed before Ameobi's eventual winner. Liverpool were the only side to let England down, as a mistake from Jamie Carragher allowed Zenit to grab the away goal they needed to send them through. It looked an uphill battle for the Reds having lost 2-0 in Russia in the first leg, but Brendan Rogers will be encouraged by the performance at Anfield that included two superb strikes from Luis Suarez.
