German domestic football returned this weekend with a bang, as 37 goals were scored on the opening weekend. No matches finished goalless, while there were some big results across the league and many players making their first league appearances for their new club.
Defending champions Bayern Munich kicked things off on Friday night with a 3-1 victory at home against Borussia Monchengladbach. Two first half goals from Robben and Mandzukic gave last seasons treble winners a comfortable lead until a defensive mix-up sent the sides into half-time with the scores at 2-1, with Dante putting the ball into his own net.
In the second half Bayern restored their 2 goal advantage from the penalty spot, with Alaba rifling his spot-kick home moments after Thomas Muller had missed his penalty. All in all, it was a comfortable victory in Pep Guardiola's first Bundesliga match.
The Saturday fixtures provided many talking points, one of which being Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's hat-trick on his Bundesliga debut. His treble helped Dortmund to a 4-0 win at Augsberg and he became only the 6th player in Bundesliga history to hit a hat-trick on his debut. Lewandowski completed the rout later on.
Newly promoted Hertha Berlin returned to the Bundesliga in style with a 6-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt. Sami Allagui and Adrian Ramos both grabbed braces, with Hertha's other goals coming from John Brooks and Ronny. Alexander Meier scored a consolation goal but the result added to Frankfurt's pre-season worries.
Last season's Bundesliga top-scorer Stefan Kiessling opened the scoring in Leverkusen's 3-1 victory against Freiburg before Mike Hanke equalised before half-time, netting his first goal for the club.
In the second-half Heung Min Son and Sidney Sam scored early on to restore Leverkusen's advantage and it didn't get any better for Freiburg who saw Jonathon Schmid have a penalty saved.
Leon Andreason and Szabolcs Huszti were on target in Hannover's 2-0 win over Wolfsburg and Eintracht Braunschweig narrowly lost 1-0 to Werder Bremen despite controlling the game, eventually falling behind in the 82nd minute to Zlatko Junuzovic's goal.
Hoffenheim threw away a 2 goal lead as they drew 2-2 to Nurnberg. David Abraham and Anthony Modeste gave the home side the advantage and they also had a third goal ruled out. In the end, 2 goals in 2 minutes from Mike Frantz and Daniel Ginczek gave the visitors a point.
A thrilling spectacle was witnessed in Sunday's matches with 11 goals scored in the 2 games played.
Nicolai Mueller opened the scoring in the 14th minute of Mainz 3-2 victory at home against Stuttgart, before Vedad Ibisevic equalised two minutes later. Shinji Okazaki scored on his Bundesliga debut to restore Mainz advantage, with Mueller then grabbing his second of the match. Martin Harnik scored what proved to be a consolation 8 minutes before the final whistle.
In the later kick-off, Schalke drew 3-3 at home to Hamburg. Klass-Jan Huntelaar opened the scoring after just 2 minutes but Rafael Van Der Vaart equalised from the spot 10 minutes later. Hamburg took the lead when Timo Hildebrand put the ball into his own net but Huntelaar scored his second to equalise.
Lasse Sobiech put Hamburg in front for the second time early in the second half, but Adam Szalai salvaged Schalke a point.
